Five Sounds That Mean Trouble For Your Car

We all know what a happy car sounds like – but what are some sounds we absolutely should not ignore? Some very common car repairs can be indicated by particular sounds when you’re driving. If you keep an ear out for these noises, you may be able to prevent more expensive car maintenance by getting your car to a shop as soon as possible.

Brake disc

Squealing or Grinding When You Brake

Pay attention when you press the brake pedal. If you hear squealing when braking, your brake pads are worn and should be replaced soon. If you hear grinding when braking, your brake pads are completely worn and the caliper is grinding against the rotor. This means that not only is it more difficult to bring your car to a stop, but you’re also causing damage to your rotors every time you brake.

Be Safe and Get New Brakes

Getting new brake pads is part of regular car maintenance. You can easily check how worn your brake pads are on your own but you’ll likely want to take your car to an auto repair shop to have the brake pads, and possible rotors, replaced. The longer you go with worn brake pads, the more expensive your repair costs may be.

Clunking or Rattling Over Bumps

Noticing your car is extra noisy when you hit a bump in the road? Your suspension system could be to blame. A likely cause is worn struts. Over time, your struts will wear out and you’ll start to hear clunking as metal parts within the struts start knocking against one another.

One Suspension Problem Can Lead to Another

Your suspension holds your car up off the ground and ensures you have a smooth ride. A bumpy ride or uneven suspension can lead to other problems, including uneven tire wear. You can prevent further car repair services by listening when you notice strange sounds from your car’s suspension system.

Steering wheel

Whining or Groaning When You Turn the Wheel

When you notice resistance and groaning when you turn your wheel, it’s best to get your power steering system checked out. Topping off your power steering fluid may help, at least temporarily, but the real problem is likely a leak or failing power steering pump that should be diagnosed by a mechanic.

Don’t Let Your Power Steering Go Out

The longer you wait to have an auto mechanic inspect your power steering system, the higher your risk of losing control over steering your car. You may not be able to properly turn your car and more damage may be done to the rest of your power steering in the process. It’s best to make an appointment to have your car serviced as soon as possible when you notice this problem beginning.

Rattling While the Engine is Running

Any time you hear rattling coming from your car, it’s cause for concern. While it could be a number of parts and problems, hearing a rattle while your engine is running likely points to your catalytic converter. Over time, the rattle will get louder and more consistent as your catalytic converter continues to wear out.

Replace a Worn Catalytic Converter Before It Fails

As your catalytic converter wears out and then fails, you’ll notice reduced engine performance, including decreased power as well as worse fuel economy. It’s an essential part of your car’s exhaust system and if it fails, your car won’t pass emissions tests, which are required in several states.
